Endswell Expands to Chapel Hill with AfterLight Gallery

Oct 5, 2026

Endswell Funeral Home is growing again.

This fall, Endswell is expanding into a new Chapel Hill location at 601 West Rosemary Street, on the ground floor of the Greenbridge building at the Chapel Hill-Carrboro border. The approximately 6,000-square-foot space fronts North Merritt Mill Road and will give Endswell a new home for meeting with families, hosting memorial services and celebrations of life, and bringing people together for educational and community events.

The expansion marks another significant step for a funeral home that began in Hillsborough in 2022 with a staff of two and a somewhat unusual idea: that funeral care could be more personal, more transparent, more environmentally thoughtful, and more connected to the community.

Today, the Endswell team has grown to 10 people, with locations in Hillsborough, Durham, and now Chapel Hill, serving families throughout the Triangle and beyond.

But the Chapel Hill location is about more than adding another office.

A Funeral Home Designed to Be Part of the Community

Funeral homes have traditionally been places most people enter only after someone has died. Endswell has been working to change that relationship.

Over the past several years, our Hillsborough location has hosted educational talks, panel discussions, workshops, Death Cafés, community gatherings, and conversations about subjects ranging from green burial and aquamation to advance planning, grief, medical aid in dying, cultural funeral traditions, obituary writing, and the changing ways Americans think about death and dying.

The Chapel Hill location gives us considerably more room to continue that work.

Our goal is to create a place where people can ask questions about death before they are in a crisis, learn about the choices available to them, and have thoughtful conversations about subjects that are often unnecessarily difficult to discuss.

Some events will be practical: how to plan a funeral, what happens after someone dies, how to write an obituary, or what families should know about cremation, aquamation, and burial.

Others will explore larger questions through conversations with physicians, hospice professionals, death doulas, clergy, academics, artists, environmentalists, historians, and other members of our community.

We believe a funeral home can be both a place that cares for people after a death and a resource that helps people become better informed about death, dying, grief, ritual, and remembrance long before our services are needed.

Introducing AfterLight: The Gallery at Endswell

The new space will also be home to AfterLight: The Gallery at Endswell, an art gallery incorporated into the Chapel Hill location.

AfterLight will feature rotating exhibitions from local and regional artists. Exhibitions will loosely explore themes connected to mortality, memory, change, impermanence, nature, loss, renewal, and what it means to live a human life.

The gallery will also serve as a setting for memorial services, celebrations of life, educational programs, and other gatherings.

The idea may sound unconventional at first: an art gallery inside a funeral home. But to us, the two belong together.

Art has always helped people make sense of experiences that are difficult to put into words. The same is true of ritual. Both allow us to remember, interpret, question, grieve, celebrate, and connect with one another.

Our hope is that AfterLight will feel less like a traditional funeral facility and more like a beautiful community space that happens to be exceptionally well equipped to help people gather when someone they love dies.

Growing Alongside the Communities We Serve

When Endswell opened in Hillsborough, our earliest work centered on aquamation, also known as alkaline hydrolysis, a water-based alternative to flame cremation. Since then, Endswell has developed into a full-service funeral home offering aquamation, low-emission cremation, natural and green burial, traditional burial, memorial and funeral services, preplanning, veterans services, and domestic and international transportation and repatriation.

Environmental responsibility remains important to us, but Endswell has never been built around one particular disposition choice.

Our role is to help families understand their options and make decisions that reflect their own values, traditions, beliefs, budgets, and circumstances, without pressure or upselling.

As the funeral home has grown, so has our team. What began with Hunter and Veronica Beattie has expanded to a staff of 10 people working across funeral directing, family care, operations, transportation, aquamation, administrative support, spiritual care, communications, and other areas of the business.

That growth allows us to remain intentionally hands-on even as we serve more families.

Endswell is locally and independently owned. Calls are answered by our own team rather than an outsourced call center, and families work directly with people who know their case. We continue to focus on clear pricing, thoughtful guidance, advocacy with hospitals, hospices, medical examiners and other institutions, and the small details that can make an extraordinarily difficult time feel more manageable.

Why Chapel Hill

Chapel Hill and Carrboro have felt like a natural extension of Endswell for years.

We already serve many families throughout Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Pittsboro, Durham, and the surrounding communities. The area is also home to an extraordinary network of physicians, hospice professionals, social workers, educators, artists, academics, faith communities, end-of-life professionals, and people interested in thinking differently about how we care for one another.

The Greenbridge location sits almost exactly at the meeting point of Chapel Hill and Carrboro, within walking distance of downtown and surrounded by neighborhoods, businesses, restaurants, arts organizations, and community institutions.

Rather than locating a funeral home apart from everyday community life, we wanted to be part of it.

That philosophy has influenced Endswell from the beginning. Death is not something that happens outside of life. It is part of every family and every community. We believe the places that help people navigate it can be welcoming, beautiful, interesting, and connected to the world around them.

Looking Ahead

The Chapel Hill location represents an important new chapter for Endswell, but it also represents a continuation of what we have been building since 2022.

We want to provide exceptional funeral care when families need us.

We also want to make reliable information about death and funeral planning easier to find. We want to create opportunities for people to learn before they are faced with an emergency. We want to support conversations that are sometimes uncomfortable but almost always worthwhile. And we want to create spaces where people can gather, not only to mourn, but to remember, learn, make art, exchange ideas, and be together.

In the months ahead, we will be announcing exhibitions at AfterLight along with talks, workshops, panels, community gatherings, and other programming at the Chapel Hill location.

We look forward to opening the doors and welcoming our neighbors in Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Pittsboro, and throughout the Triangle.
