Most of downtown Hillsborough sits inside the historic district, and a lot of the families we
work with live in it. The houses are old, the streets are narrow, the churches are within walking
distance of each other, and none of that is incidental when you are arranging a funeral. It changes
where people can park, how a procession works, and often where the service itself should be held.
This page is about the practical side of arranging a service if you live in or near the
district.
Church, Graveside or Here
Downtown families usually have three realistic venues, and the right one depends less on
tradition than on numbers.
A church service works when there is a congregation the person belonged to and enough people
coming to fill a room. It is the default a lot of families reach for, and when it fits, it fits.
A graveside works when the group is small and the weather cooperates. The town’s cemeteries are
open sunrise to sunset, which sets the boundary on timing. In winter that closes the afternoon
earlier than people expect.
Holding it at the funeral home works when the family wants something that is not a church
service and not a burial. We are under two miles from the district, which means people can come
from downtown without it being an expedition.
The Parking Problem Nobody Mentions
Downtown parking is mostly on-street. For an immediate family gathering that is fine. For eighty
people arriving inside the same ten minutes it is not, and it is the single most common thing
families forget until the morning itself.
If you are expecting a crowd, work out in advance where cars go, and tell people in the notice
rather than leaving them circling. If you are running a procession from a downtown church to a
cemetery, walk the route first or ask us to. Narrow historic streets and a line of cars are a
combination that needs planning rather than improvisation.

present. An urn gallery, with pieces made by North Carolina artisans rather than ordered from a
catalogue.
We opened in 2022. Hunter Beattie and Veronica Penn Beattie founded the business after coming
out of the nonprofit and renewable energy sectors, neither of them from the funeral industry. That
is either reassuring or alarming depending on your view, and we would rather say it plainly than
have you find out later.
Preplanning, Which Downtown Families Do More Than Most
A large share of our work is preplanning: someone recording their own arrangements, often
prepaying them, years before anything happens. It is more common here than in most places, and the
reason is usually the same. People who have already sorted out a will and an old house tend to
finish the job.
Preplanning appointments are unhurried on purpose. There is no reason to decide anything in one
sitting, and the useful part is often just writing down what you do not want. If you tell nobody
what you want, someone who loves you will guess, under time pressure, on the worst week of their
life.
Prices You Can Read First
Our general price list is on this site. Providers in the United States must supply one on
request in person,1 and most stop there. Publishing it means you can compare us against
anyone else in the county without picking up a phone.
If cost is the thing driving the decision, say so at the first meeting. It is a normal thing to
say and it changes what we show you.
Getting Here From the Historic District
The drive is short. the historic district sits about 1.9 miles southeast of the funeral home on Meadowlands Drive, which in normal traffic is under ten minutes. Families often come straight from a viewing or a graveside back to us, or the other way around, and the distance is small enough that nobody has to plan the day around driving.
If you are coordinating a service and a burial on the same morning, tell us and we will build the timings around the cemetery rather than around our own schedule. Processions, pallbearers and clergy all need slack in the plan, and it is easier to add that at the start than to claw it back on the day.

Talking to Someone
If a death has already happened, call and we will walk you through the next few hours. There is no form to fill in first and nothing to prepare. If you are planning ahead instead, you can take as long as you want; preplanning appointments are unhurried by design, and writing your own arrangements down is the single kindest thing you can do for the people who will otherwise have to guess.

Coordinating With a Church
If the service is in one of the downtown churches, the church sets the timing and everyone else
works around it, including us. Ask them first, before anything is announced. Clergy availability
and the building’s own schedule decide more funerals than families realise, and working backwards
from a church slot is far easier than trying to move one.
Tell us early if there is a church involved and we will handle the coordination directly rather
than passing messages through you. Grieving families should not be a switchboard.
Older Houses, Practical Problems
Historic houses come with steps, narrow hallways and no lift. If relatives are gathering at a
family home before or after a service, think about who cannot manage stairs and where they will
sit. It is the kind of detail nobody plans and everybody notices.
The same applies to a viewing. If mobility is a concern for several people coming, holding it
somewhere level and accessible is not a compromise. It is the difference between people attending
and people staying home.
Preplanning Paperwork Worth Having
Two documents make everything easier and neither is expensive: a written record of what you
want, and a note of where the important papers are kept. Insurance, deeds, service preferences and
the names of people who should be told all sit in different places in most households, and the
person who knew where is the person who has died.

Read them yourself, then read the reviews of every other funeral home you are considering, and pay attention to what people say about the week rather than the day. Anybody can run a good service. The difference shows in whether somebody answered the phone at two in the morning and whether the price at the end matched the price at the start.
