Obituary

Daniel Hunt Clare III, age 85, passed away peacefully in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, on December 5, 2023. Dan was born in New Jersey on August 28, 1938, to Daniel H. Clare, Jr. and Gertrude Z. Clare. His father was a Foreign Service Officer and Deputy Director of Security at the State Department, serving in New York, Washington, and Geneva. Dan entered the U.S. Foreign Service in 1962 after graduating from the University of Virginia and Johns Hopkins SAIS.

Dan is survived by his wife of 55 years, Gwen C. Clare, a fellow Foreign Service Officer. They subsequently served, and raised their children Daniel and Monica, in Ethiopia, Chile, Peru, Paraguay and Washington. After retiring from the State Department, Dan then joined Motorola Inc., and accompanied Gwen as she took on increasingly senior roles in various diplomatic postings throughout Latin America.

Dan and Gwen retired to Hilton Head before finally settling in Chapel Hill. Beyond spending time with his growing family, tennis and travel filled much of his free time. An avid tennis player until his diagnosis with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis in 2018, he had played enthusiastically in Asmara at 7,500 feet, Quito at 10,000 feet and at their mountain home at 4,000 feet. Dan loved the sea, and when he could no longer have a boat, he enjoyed 41 cruises covering most of the world.

Besides his wife Gwen, Dan leaves behind his brother Richard D. Clare, his son Daniel H. Clare IV (and wife Natalie), his daughter Monica C. Clare (and wife Jeanine), and five grandchildren (Isabel, Samantha, Lillian, Gabi and Isaac).

Private memorial services will be arranged in the future. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the AuthoraCare Foundation.
