Obituary
Marvin Augusta Staten was born November 15, 1951 in Plymouth, NC to Lorenzo Augusta Staten and Artelia Peele Staten.
Marvin grew up in Piney Woods community and attended public schools in Jamesville and Williamston, NC. In 1970 he joined the US Army and was stationed in Okinawa, Japan as a Radio Intelligence Operator. He was honorably discharged in 1976. Upon returning home, Marvin attended Martin Technical Institute and graduated with a degree in Business Administration in 1975.
Marvin began his career working with The Proctor & Gamble Distributing Company in 1976 and remained until 1991 when decided to take the plunge and become an entrepreneur.
October 1, 1991 Marvin opened “Heel Sew Quik”, a shoe and leather repair franchise, and began a thirty year journey which he came to love every day. This simple, quiet man of few words, blossomed into a man who loved talking with and serving his customers and the community. He had found his niche. In April 1996, he was featured in Black Enterprise Magazine in an article entitled “Fast foot service”. Marvin enjoyed encouraging and mentoring young people and demonstrated this interest through his association with The Little Willie Center. Marvin was a loving and caring individual who always put others before himself. He found immense joy and pride in his work, as well as in his daughter Ashley, whom he adored. Marvin and his wife Shelley Ann Holliday, who he married in 1981, often spent their time together, either working in the yard or sitting on the swing listening to the sounds of nature. Marvin was also a passionate Pittsburgh Steelers fan, and enjoyed activities such as golf, bowling, and coin collecting.
He is survived by his wife, Shelley Holliday Staten, daughter Ashley Noelle Staten, brothers Johnnie Staten (Glinnie), and Shelton Staten, sister Ann Spruill ( Robert) brothers-in law John Holliday, Arthur Holliday, Anthony Holliday (Elaina), sister-in law Antoinette Holliday, along with extended family and friends. Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, Lorenzo and Artelia Staten.
Marvin – beloved husband, father, brother and friend died on October 19, 2023 after an extended illness. His spirit lives on in the love he had for his family, friends and community.
